Why we invested in Afference, bringing seamless tactile experiences to the digital world
Despite advances in audio and video, tactile feedback in digital environments remains limited, which restricts fully immersive experiences. While feed-forward controls (human-to-computer) have evolved significantly, the feedback loop (computer-to-human) has lagged. Effective touch feedback is crucial for seamless spatial computing, enhancing interactions like button presses or creating new dimensions in gaming. However, current solutions are constrained: haptic devices are bulky, energy-intensive, and rely on moving parts, while ultrasound-based feedback is restricted to a narrow range of motion. These limitations underscore the need for a more mobile and transparent tactile feedback solution.
Afference addresses these limitations with neural haptic technology that directly stimulates the nervous system to create artificial touch. Unlike traditional haptics, this technology eliminates moving parts, reducing energy needs and allowing for a lightweight, unobtrusive form factor. The Phantom, Afference’s wearable neural interface, uses self-adjusting rings that deliver precise electrical impulses to activate specific nerves, producing realistic touch sensations independent of physical hardware. This unique computer-to-human feedback loop bridges a crucial gap, enabling seamless, immersive tactile interactions in XR environments.
We invested in Afference’s Seed round because Afference’s low-energy, hardware-independent neural haptic technology could allow wearables to achieve a level of tactile engagement that traditional haptics cannot match, all while maintaining efficient battery life and sleek form factors. By incorporating neural haptics, these wearables could provide effective touch sensations for XR applications—such as remote button presses, alerts, or tactile notifications—offering both an immersive dimension in spatial computing and practical daily applications.
